I was at a place where my mother lives yesterday. This is a place that is for people 60 and older. It's apartments with a nursing home on the grounds.
I was outside having my after meal smoke in the designated area and there were four women out there and my mother joined me but she don't smoke. A conversation ensued about medical insurance and I just kind of stood there listening. Then the conversation evolved into income for the elderly and things that effect the older people and the poor.
I was not my usual self in this instance. Usually I would jump in full force and would argue the wrongs of others. Instead, I listened with next to nothing to say until the ladies started blaming Democrats for everything. I had enough because this was false information to me. So I calmly started explaining about the Republican budget and talking about healthcare and I was told I was wrong over and over again but I kept calm.
I was seriously told that Republicans are the ones who care about the elderly and medical and even the poor. I ended up walking away thinking to myself that this is what is wrong with America because these are the people who get out and vote. Here we are with a budget bill that would cut meals on wheels, throw 23 million people off healthcare, cut social security and food stamps and such. This place is even income based so these people are not swimming in money here. I would also assume that these ladies were church going people since people their age are generally and the place is a baptist run place.
That right there is the definition of fake news. People sitting around talking about things that even at their age they are failing to understand. All while collecting money from the government to survive and having their rents based on this money. These people will go out and vote for people who will directly hurt them. But they are the voters and they represent a sect of society who is very motivated to vote.
I don't know where those ladies gathered information. But those are the people who need a wake up call. Those are the people who need facts. those are people who get out and hurt us come voting time.
But this is all representing a much bigger problem. It is wholly in this area. This is Appalachia and generally people in this area are poor. Yet this is a deep, red place and this place votes against its own interest all the time. I can tell countless stories about people at the grocery store complaining about Democrats while using their food stamp card. People using medicaid while praising Republicans. People living in section 8 while bashing Democrats and this list could go on.
These people are sad because these are the people who voted for Donald Trump. Of course they are not the only demographic who voted for him, but they represent what would be a solid base to the party. A solid base with false information and they are willing to spread this information while using these programs.
It saddened me and really opened my eyes to how disillusioned people really are and how much that contributes to not only the problems in this area, but nationwide.

Perhaps there are folks that will make this same statement about you. Here you go again with your misinformation. The agency that handles meals on wheels (among many other things) has a proposed budget cut. The Meals program is a tiny portion of its responsibility. You are assuming what you do not know as fact. Same goes for food stamps which falls under the Dept of Agriculture and has a proposed cut of 18%. Not SNAP benefits, the agency responsible for SNAP benefits. Throwing 23 million people off of health care has nothing to do with the budget, though I'll dare you to show me where that is. Under the bill recently passed by the House and is currently in the Senate to reform the ACA, a supposed (not proven) 23 million people would lose their healthcare over 10 years. Most of these 'losses' would be younger people opting to not purchase the healthcare they now are forced to buy or pay a penalty. These "facts" as you know them are the reason Washington DC is politically gridlocked.

These are facts and the cuts show them.
For older people to vote in a way that cuts programs for themselves is wrong information. The right goes nuts about tax savings while the left goes crazy about helping people. One party will work for a set of people while the other party won't.
People don't ever expect to get cancer, expecting young people to leave insurance does not save money, it ups costs. If a uninsured person goes to the ER for treatment and they don't pay because the costs are out of control, the "savings (haha)" gets passed down to the people who pay for insurance. So these people who vote to screw a part of the population when it comes to insurance ends up paying for their vote by higher premiums. Hard concept to understand? Point out my wrong!
What party right this second is threatening cuts? Have we heard the left do this to this extreme? Not that I can remember. Cuts will hurt someone and someone will pay for those cuts. Nothing is wrong with what I posted above and the way I think are facts outside the box. So, the proof will be in the pudding here.
And your claiming that perhaps I need a wake up call? Your funny!

The last administration added almost $10 trillion to the national debt. Recipients of SNAP benefits almost doubled during the last 8 years. The cost of most healthcare policies have doubled over the last 10 years. The leftists are always eager to spend someone else's money in the name of progress. How much longer can we afford this trend?

How much longer can we afford this trend? Okay, but how soon the right forgets. The last administration had to deal with an economic recession caused by Bush. And here we are again with someone pushing the same types of policies that caused problems back then. One party works for the people (guess who it is) and another party works for the rich (guess who it is). When you look at people who are normal everyday workers and those people are struggling and cut programs, you don't push those people into working more hours at low wages, you push those people into crime. If your baby needs milk and your poor wages cannot afford the milk, you go out and get that milk any way you can. Sell drugs? Rob a store? What is the case here? All the high paying jobs are leaving and what used to be starter jobs like fast food or gas stations or whatnot is now career jobs and people retire from these crap jobs. And the right wants to look at these people and tell them to live on less? They want to yank these people off insurance? They should try harder in a crappy economy? Oh, we will crash. Really I can't wait. Because at that point we will go back to the drawing board and make a system that works. Oh man, the crash, I have been wanting it for years.

I rest my case. I couldn't add to that if I tried. Class dismissed. Well, if your interested in a class, look up the history of the Roman Empire and do a sharp comparison to where we are now. The crash is imminent, I just wish it would happen already. History does have a habit of repeating itself. HINT: Something about the ever growing military and income disparity. Have fun.

Have fun. i think a Hitler style final solution will repeat itself too when everything crashes and burns. they will lock up the elderly, disabled, minorities, and poor. can't work in the gulags then you get a lethal injection. what do you think all those millions coffins and thousands of FEMA camps are for that Jesse Ventura dug up on his program Conspiracy Theory. a show mind you that was abruptly canceled. it should be noted after this episode aired those coffins were moved to another location.

Read more: tnewsbackupforum.boards.net/thread/830/older-people-politcs#ixzz4iPTwES4fThe system that works has been proven throughout history. It's apparently tough for progressives to accept. I posted "Gods of the Copybook Headings" on another thread. Maybe a little hard to understand if one is not really interested. Here's a good read on it. www.tiffanymadison.com/the-blog/gods-of-the-copybook-headings-rudyard-kiplingIn these modern times, the West's unsustainable "ideas of the marketplace" steadily march toward reckoning day. In the United States, the empire upon which the entire global financial fiat-money scheme is centered, the state has erected itself as a welfare/warfare entity, defying natural law in a myriad of ways. As we (Americans) "progressed" away from principles of self-determination and self-reliance, we've bought into the marketplace ideas of dependence and expectation of comfort, luxury, opportunity and entitlement only the state can promise to provide. We've chosen to value positive rights over protecting our negative rights, or natural rights. The Gods of the Marketplace are convincing, persuasive and full of promises they're unable to keep (the government doesn't even collect enough tax revenue to cover the costs of endless wars, mandatory entitlement programs and interest on the debt; we'll eventually default or drastically cut the cord for the dependent class, which will not be pretty).

Good article. I would go a bit further. Consumerism is what kills a fiat currency along with military spending. Let's look at the Roman Empire in history and compare: Rome started life on the barter system much like we did. Moved to be backed by gold and silver (real money), moved to being half backed, then finally full on fiat currency. Governments hate a gold backed monetary system. That system has limits. Our war machine and war budget is very much in line with a government that has no interest in saving. Good talking points, sure, but they prove time and time again they don't want to save. I mean, we could cut half the military budget and we would be on a fast track to gaining control of our finances and we would still be spending a heck of a lot more then anyone in the world on military. Instead of cutting back on the machine, they attack the poor and vulnerable. Then to top it all off, they support regulations that promotes being poor. We have made it easier for companies to be more profitable by giving them the ability to move to China. We have made it easier for companies to be profitable by making it harder for someone to start a business. We have made it easier for businesses to be profitable keeping wages low here in the USA. If wages followed inflation, people would be making north of 20 bucks an hour. Today for the first time in history our children will make less then their parents. At the cost of military and business, it becomes impossible for the working class. I expect the housing market to shrink, car sales to shrink and we have already seen many businesses close up shop, this will continue. In favor of the military and the rich the government has worked through intention or not, to make it harder for everyday folks. How many people left the work force in 2008 and just hasn't returned? I was watching a video the other day of something in New York city. I kind of wonder with what looks like a thriving economy if they know what it feels like in rural America. I wonder if they see places close down. At any rate, our government gets exactly what it asks for in creating people that need entitlements. What happened in Washington state when they got the 15 dollar minimum wage? Their unemployment rate become the lowest in the nation at 2.4 percent. People were motivated to go out and make that money. Nationwide? Inflation will just eat it up. Of course my mortgage won't change or a current car payment and for that we benefit. But when these businesses have to pay out more things cost more and that's just fact. I would love a wage increase in America but it really fixes nothing. My solution kind of comes from the communist handbook. Lock prices and a wage increase. I'm sure that makes a Republicans blood boil but that is a way to fix the problem. We got many problems and I believe we are beyond the point of solutions. Especially when the government is not willing to look at other play books and is not willing to change regulation that hurts the working class. We can all continue to pick a side and act like we are enemies and that's really fine. Because I have realized a long time ago that while we do this we ignore the elephant in the room.

Lock prices and a wage increase wasn't something like that tried during the FDR administration? i seem to recall something along those lines of price freezes and rationing during wartime. i don't recall how well it worked or why it was discontinued.

It did happen: www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=16381It was the result of WW2 and FDR had no challengers on a Constitutional level because of the war. Interesting.

One party will work for a set of people while the other party won't. This is a prime example of an emotionally charged generalization. When we can stop labeling one another, we might be able to come together for the greater good. From last year's teaming of a pop star and a spiritual leader, the message is still applicable: The spiritual leader and pop star paired up for a panel on kindness, preaching against violence and division. On current American politics, the Dalai Lama said policies of force are outdated and cause unpredictable outcomes. Lady Gaga built on that idea, saying violence only brings more violence. The Dalai Lama said people must talk and respect each other's interests and rights to solve problems. Lady gaga agreed... Saying people must stop using labels and focus on kindness.

JMHO,your a good person and your making me think about the way I view things. I am usually the type of person who is willing to argue my points but you are making good points that are making me see things in a somewhat different perspective.
It's just hard for me. When a group comes together and 9 out of 10 in that group wants to hurt a person or another group, it's hard not to generalize even when the one persone didn't vote to hurt the group or person and they don't fit into the generalization.
I believe very much in kindness. I also beieve in taking care of those who need help. There is a set of humanity that does not feel the same as I do. What about racial hatred? Would we not call that bigotry? What about those who claim to not want to helpothers for the sake of benefiting themselves? Would we not call that selfish?
There are groups in society that belong to slurs and that is their choice for belonging to the group. For instance, would we not say the KKK are a bunch of racists? Would we not say the Zionism don't in some way amount to white supremacy?
Tough one for me.
