Matt Calderone (Submitted by Matt Calderone) TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Former University of Alabama Student Government Association president Matt Calderone announced today that he will run for the District 4 seat on the Tuscaloosa City Council. Calderone, 22, is on track to receive his undergraduate degree from UA in August, a few weeks ahead of the Aug. 27 municipal elections. He completed his 2012-2013 term as UA SGA president on April 2. Councilman Lee Garrison announced this week that he will not run for re-election this year in District 4, which includes much of downtown Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama campus area. Garrison, who was first elected to the City Council while he was an undergraduate student at UA in 1997, will seek election as chairman of the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education in August. Calderone, a Trussville native who began an internship at City Hall during his second year at the university, said he wants to continue to serve the people of Tuscaloosa. "My experiences throughout my entire life and especially those in Tuscaloosa have led me to a point where I feel a call to serve in this community," Calderone said. He was tapped as a member of Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox's Incident Command recovery team after the April 27, 2011, tornado, and currently serves on the Citizens' Advisory Committee. He plans to attend graduate school and is considering a career in higher education. Calderone set out goals of strengthening the partnership between the city and UA, building "town-gown" relationships and working with local businesses. "I love the community of Tuscaloosa and I plan to be here for a very long time," Calderone said. "As long as the community will have me here to serve -- if they will -- I'll be happy to do it." blog.al.com/tuscaloosa/2013/04/ua_student_matt_calderone_runn.html

They need to install a 12 ft high fence around the UA, not allow any of the students out until they receive the degree they're going to school for; then give them a one way bus ticket to any city other than Tuscaloosa and if they return shoot them; especially the ones that think they're like Lee Garrison or Walt Maddox

...give them a one way bus ticket to any city other than Tuscaloosa and if they return shoot them; especially the ones that think they're like Lee Garrison or Walt Maddox Literate? Electable? Charismatic? Ambitious? Dedicated? You sound kind of whiny. Brag about your achievements. Maybe you'll feel better.

We need more UA graduates to stay in Tuscaloosa, not less. Young professionals invigorate the economy because of their large disposable income.

If they do good, they should be applauded. Unfortunately, too often the University of Alabama thinks the City of Tuscaloosa is here to serve them, like Spencer Bachus thought government regulators were there "to serve the banks." As enrollment at the University increases, now at 30,000, UA students are one-third the population of the City. We are quickly becoming the City of University of Alabama. Has anyone been fishing at The Park at Manderson Landing lately? What's the continuing story on the University thinking that belongs to them, harassing the public, trying to run people off for not getting the proper permissions from the University, and trying to keep it a private preserve for those who "have a connection with the University?"

I think the Manderson Landing parking situation is related to the problems with game day parking. Restricting the time to an hour is one way to discourage fans from using the parking there.
I haven't heard of any actual week day enforcement of the parking limit.
Does anyone know of an incident where a ticket's been given?

The one hour parking thing is to try and stop the students from parking there during the week. My husband, who hasn't posted his experiences yet, has been harrassed while trying to fish on the pier at night to the point where he hardly ever goes down there to fish anymore. It's just a damn shame.

However, I would love to get a ticket if for no other reason to fight it and bring it to the publics attention.

Be sure to park on a football game day! I fully expect there to be parking restrictions on a game day. I'm fine with that. What we're not fine with is getting harrassed on a fishing pier at 8 or 9 pm. That's when I want them to hand us a ticket. Or for that matter. During the day when we're parked there, for more than an hour, fishing.
