Man’s quip draws police attention
WARREN — A Brookfield man cited on traffic violations Tuesday could face drug charges after being accused of making a comment that he’s smarter than police and he got away with something.
Martin Halstead, 26, was cited Tuesday on charges of driving under suspension and a stop sign violation, according to a police report. However, if suspected heroin and crack cocaine found in the area where he pulled over come back from a lab with positive results, an arrest warrant will be issued on charges of possession of heroin and cocaine and tampering with evidence, a police report states.
Halstead was pulled over after failing to stop while making a right turn at the intersection of Northfield Avenue and Norwood Street NW, the report states. Halstead argued with police about the traffic violation, and he refused to identify himself, the report states.
While police searched Halstead’s vehicle, he said he would have the ticket thrown out after speaking to Warren Municipal Court Judge Thomas Gysegem, the report states. Two used bindles of suspected heroin were found in the center console of Halstead’s car and he told police he doesn’t use drugs when asked what his drug of choice is, the report states.
After having his car towed and being handed a ticket, Halstead walked away and said “I am smarter than you and I got away with it,” the report states. Police, who found the comment odd, thought they may have missed something, so they walked back to where Halstead was stopped. They found six bindles of suspected heroin, one plastic bag tip of suspected heroin and one rock of crack cocaine all packaged for sale, the report states.
Police reviewed video footage from their police car and saw a plastic bag being thrown from the passenger side window of Halstead’s car, the report states. Halstead maintained it wasn’t his and that police planted it on the scene, the report states.
