Once again the City is seeking grants for projects. (I can't read the actual article but the headline caught my eye.) Here's what I want to know. What the heck is the County doing? I hear a lot of complaining, by people in the County, that the City is getting this and the City is getting that while all the while their representative are't doing, as far as I can tell, much of anything to procure funds. I want to suggest that more people, who live in the County, get more involved and take their representatives to task. If the City can do it so can the County. Show up. Speak up. Get involved. (How's that for a Monday morning soap box?)

Not Bad, Not bad at all for a Monday morning soap box.
"City officials are seeking two grants to fund sidewalk renovations downtown and a westward extension of the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk."
"If approved, the city will be required to provide a $137,800 match for the funds that will improve sidewalks, add handicapped parking spaces, add lighting and other amenities to six areas of downtown."
Given the reputation that someone has for not spending money I don't see the county doing projects like this for a while...

The above image shows what the city is wanting to improve.

Thanks, RG and Rhino.
I have no real problem with matching funds. If we can get the grants to do things that make improvements I think it's something positive. What bugs me is when people who don't live in the City, I'm not going to go into the police jurisdiction issues, seems to feel they're entited to part of the moneies the City worked their tails off to get. County residents, and I can appreciate their position, really need to come forward and demand some changes. It's not like the County doesn't have some matching funds. Why aren't they being more agressive in support of things for their residents as the City officials are?

I would say that part of the problem is the county would then have to provide those things. If you don't provide those things then there is no reason to go after the funding..
Also at least some of the people in the county are very opposed to the County intruding into their lives. Things like Nuisance ordinances, Zoning ordinances etc would interfere with their right to do as they please on their property.

Riverwalk Phase V
Has anyone really looked at that area? Much of it is very hidden from view, not near any streets. I would never want my family walking along much of that area.

I can't tell you how glad I am that we bought in the City. When we decided we wanted City services we made a very good decision.

The goal is for it toeventually go all the way to 82. I have no problem with it. We've spent time after dark on the river walk and there are other areas that don't have a good street view. For the most part, it's very well lit. I really wouldn't feel threatened walking there.

Its the new Phase V part west of the Amphitheater, going by the railroad tracks and back toward the barge coal loading facility where it gets far from the roads and very 'out of view'.

Well, the country club is getting redeveloped into a golf community like the Links, plus I can see the Newtown district gentrifying in the next decade. I wouldn't be surprised to see more development in the area between the country club and the amphitheater.

I didn't realize which direction you were talking about. Although, I don't really see much of a problem over on that end either. Where is it now is off the beaten path heading that way. That area is changing with the purchase of the golf course and all the redevelopment of that area.

God can still see them. They are very safe. Unless you mean that you are afraid that if you can't see your family, they might take up smoking or IV drug use or something. Is that what you are saying?

Keep stroking those keys. Maybe at some point the odds will be in your favor and sensible words will come through.

I've written it into my will that 300 years after my death, a council will be called in the holy city of Sawyerville. At that Council of Sawyerville, a group of bishops from all the voting districts in the Great State of Alabama will decide which of my posts are the truest, and the most poetic, and those will be included on my Bartleby webpage.
