Five-year-old boy accidentally shoots, kills sister A 5-year-old Kentucky boy who received a .22-caliber rifle as a gift accidentally shot and killed his 2-year-old sister on Tuesday, according to state police. The toddler was shot at just after 1 p.m. local time on Lawson’s Bottom Road in Cumberland County, police said. The girl was taken to Cumberland County Hospital and later pronounced dead. The mother of the two children was at home at the time of the shooting, Cumberland County Coroner Gary White told the local newspaper, the Lexington Herald-Leader. He said that the family did not realize that there was a shell inside the gun. The firearm was kept in a corner, he said. “It’s a Crickett,” Cumberland County Coroner Gary White told the paper. “It’s a little rifle for a kid.” “The little boy’s used to shooting the little gun,” White said. The shooting occurred while the boy was playing with the rifle, police said. It was “just one of those crazy accidents,” White told the Herald-Leader. link

I understand there are families who hunt that would give a kid a rifle. But a 5 Year Old? Really? Until a child is old enough to understand firearm safety they shouldn't be given a firearm. Firearms are NOT toys. And yet companies are promoting them for children. Crickett

The parents definitely need to be taught gun safety and given a few years to contemplate it.
While I MIGHT could see giving a child a rifle I do NOT see allowing that child access to the rifle OR ammo EVER without a responsible adult there.

I bet this gets written off as a terrible accident and the parents never get held responsible. Throw their negligent asses in jail!!! I don't get this pissed off very often but this has brought out the wosrt in me.

A five year old shooting a rifle is way, way, different than a five year old having access to a rifle. The parents should bare all responsibility for this incident.

Wasn't that Walter boy in Scout's class about six in To Kill a Mockingbird? He had his own gun. Of course his dad was also a part of a mob which tried to hang a man without a trial, so there is that.

This morning I read where another 4 year old boy shot a 6 year old with a 22! When I was 6 my dad ALLOWED me to go from a BB gun to a 410 single shot when squirrel hunting; the barrel was opened and a shell was NOT in the barrel until he told me I could shoot and the hammer wasn't pulled back until the barrel was looking up. I feel so sorry for the NRA because there DUMBA$$ CEO in the past 2 or 3 weeks has cost the lives of 3 kids and you can't blame ANYONE but HIM!
