I remember as a kid back in the 1960s going with my Dad and cousins going to a favorite community swimming hole at Hurricane Creek near the bridge on the Holt-Peterson Road.
Then, about 30 years ago, a horse farm up the hill bought the property and fenced off access to it. They thought that our natural resource would be put to better use as a private place to exercise their horses than allowing families access to their swimming hole they’ve been going to for generations.
So, I thought, you want to be a butt about it, maybe there is another place to go swimming in the creek. And yes, indeed, there was – down at the end of the paved road at Old Mill Trace on Keene’s Mill Road.
For years during the 1980s, refugees denied access to the other place congregated and fellowshipped there. My own son’s first experience in creek swimming was out there. But then, alas, the iron hand of so-called private property slammed down its heavy hand.
But all was not as it seemed. A new property owner presumed to control access to creek, putting up NoTresspassing signs along the trail to the creek many used for years.
OK, another instance of somebody with money being able to say, “This is mine. I don’t want you even near me. You want your own creek – go buy one.”
This worship of private property rights is beginning to ruin what was really nice about the America I grew up in. This idea of “I have the money; I bought it; now you get the hell out” has started killing any sense of community for the common good we once had.
I know there will some idiots out there saying, “That’s just ENVY! You’re just jealous because somebody else can, and you can’t.”
I all I can say is, it didn’t used to be this way. What happened to turn Americans so selfish that they, really, want to deny everybody else some of the simple pleasures of life, like taking your family swimming at the creek – for free – without somebody else claiming ownership and walling off everyone else around them?

Did you just say that with the gravelly coach's voice, like "eligibility"?

Actually., Liability was the excuse, the real reason was Selfishness and Greed. You can't have the "Individualist" creed without it. It's the whole basis of that creed. I've got mine, screw everyone else! The "Individualist" creed, as professed by the modern Republicans and Libertarians, can not exist in a Civilized Society. Civilized Societies are Socialist by nature. They can not exist any other way. What Our Founding Fathers tried to do was strike a balance between the two. Modern "Constitutionalist" refuse to believe that.

There were a few decent looking chicks (maybe 1/80) I would let come over, but thats about it.

Para owns the access to the swimming hole now and it is still free to go swimming there. Plenty of people hang out there almost every weekend when it's warm enough. Before they made the access road and you could park on the side of 216, I walked down to the creek and there were broken beer bottles, beer cans, cigarette butts, trash, and dirty clothes and towels everywhere. Para wants it to be open to the public but the public is the one trashing it and making it to where others can't enjoy it.

Just start taking what you want. If someone owns something and you covet it - just take it.
If you like my new 6 series BMW convertible, why not take it from me? Likewise with my house on the lake. Walk in, live there, go swimming from my pier, and take my jet skis out for fun. That way, you can forget about Hurricane Creek access.
Instead of whining about how it’s not fair and about how it wasn’t like this in the past, just take what you want from those who have it. Then you can finally be happy.

PARA is trying very hard to get the issues down there under control. They have park rangers patroling and, on at least one occassion that I've seen, had police escort some out that had beer etc down there.
BTW, have you seen the plans PARA has for Hurricane Creek? They are wonderful.

False equivalency - a manufactured good is not the same thing as a natural resource. Ayn Rand herself would agree. Try again.

They, bascially, gave them the right of way for the stinkin bridges. I'm not an expert on all that's been going on and Creekkeeper is out of the Country to ask. But, I did see the plans for Hurricane Creek that Para is doing and they are going to be great. Campgrounds, zip lines and all kindsa of things.

I don't know how long you have lived in Tuscaloosa but i've been living in this one horse town for 63 years and it's been the same for the 63 years; I wouldn't hold my breath for them to finish all that; Hell River Road was to be completed 30 years ago; it was to end at Exit 100 at the Interstate; 82 was to be 4 laned thru the state 10 years ago; all i'm saying is this state is a wishing well! The eastern by-pass is going to be the same way forgotten in another 5 or 10 years
