Looks like Republicans are backpeddeling for fear inner city school kids will end up at their neighborhood schools.
"As time runs out to clarify Alabama’s new private school tax credits, Republican lawmakers appear to agree on only one point: They want to be clear that no public or private school has to take a student from a failing public school.
Proponents say that will keep successful schools from being overrun with new students. Opponents say it’s a way to let overwhelmingly white suburban schools reject inner-city students." link

I said to start with, this is just another way to get rid of "Public" Schools.

Gee maybe they should have had some actual discussion and debate on the bill instead of pulling their bait and switch ...

I don't know how much difference it would have made. The Republicans have the majority and are doing what ever the hell they want. The Democrats are very frustrated. Hell, I don't know why do they even bother to show up? And, people just keep voting the Republicans into office. I'd vote for almost anyone just to get rid of Gerald Allen.

I'd vote for almost anyone just to get rid of Gerald Allen. This being Alabama, I'm sure you will be granted something quite exactly like your wish.

Thank you for your kind reply.
"...trying to start something...?" No I am not, it's simply a question that immediately came to mind and no, I am not naive.
The point is that if there are no inner city kids in a school, why would anyone want to go get them and bring them to their school? There may be no Choctaws and no Laotians enrolled, because they don't live near the school, but is that a lamentable condition that needs to be corrected? Should Choctaws and Laotians be located and brought in?
Now, why would people purposefully want to change the culture of their school if doing so brought in gang culture, heightened crime, dangerous students, those who refuse to cooperate, and those who choose to be academically dysfunctional? Why would this be something to strive for? Why add this to what you have?
Of course not all inner city students are not like this, but quite a few are. If they aren't naturally present, why put forth effort to add them?
Lastly, and with all due respect, you should abjure the notion of questioning whether or not I am capable of engaging in intelligent conversation. Thank you again.

What was the purpose of the bill? To allow kids from "failing schools" to go to private schools at your expense.
What happens when private schools said, "Yeah, we'll take your money, but we don't want THOSE kids?" The Republicans realized that rushing things through without much thought might not have been a good idea.
It's just another one of those instances where Republicans step in their own mess they made.

What Alabama needs a new generation of progressive Democrats. Not yellow dog Democrats; not blue dog Democrats; but some junkyard dog Democrats who are in no way afraid to mix it up with the Republican communazis and will do what is necessary to once again make this state responsive to the needs of the average working Alabamian.
