The Confederate "battle flag" I believe is the small square version of the rectangular flag above on the left. This design, square or rectangular, is the only Confederate flag most people recognize. Growing up in Texas long ago, I learned it as the "stars and bars", though it seems that the name now is commonly applied to the flag above on the right.
About 15 or 20 years ago, there was a revived argument about the flag flying officially in southern states in various forms, and the flag supporters argued that its OK to fly a Confederate flag as long as it's not the square battle flag, because that's the only one that would be racist. What a load of BS that was.
The fact is, after the Civil War all these confederate flag were symbols of defiance of the outcome of the war (ending of slavery). Southern heritage is 300+ years long, and the Confederate flag symbolizes only that 4-year period when the south was in rebellion in its attempt to preserve slavery. It's delusional for anyone to fly that flag and claim it has nothing to do with white supremacy.

The sad part slavery will never go away. It is still here in different forms. However slavery is slavery ,no matter, what form, really.

It is still here in different forms. However slavery is slavery ,no matter, what form, really. It is a patriotic act to bring down that Confederate flag. It is near treason to fly a flag that symbolizes a violent rebellion for the purpose of preserving chattel slavery. The U.S. flag and the Confederate flag are in no way comparable. I'm a son of a Confederate state myself, and I'm inclined to excuse a multitude of sins of the South, but I cannot excuse the political and religious leaders who took the region into war to preserve a social abomination that virtually all the rest of the world had recognized as evil and abolished years before. It's true we have some forms of metaphorical slavery, like subsistence wages, student debt, exclusion from educational and financial opportunities, suppression of political rights, etc. But they more properly called discrimination or unfairness, and are not in the same category as chattel slavery.

To remove all the markings is going to be a costly task. Such as the craving on Stone Mountain Ga. As many other places have symbols.
That burden of cost will most likely not be so much on the people who are whineing so much. Which they should have to contribute as well if not more. Much is left to do other than just remove the flag from the pole. After all it has been apart of history for many years,Good or Bad.
