OK,
so i was watching reruns of "Boston Legal" last night. it is a lawyer show set in Boston, MA. they had a case of a homeless veteran with PTSD who was being prosecuted by the federal government for poaching fish to live as he was starving, can't hold a job because of his PTSD so he is homeless. well one of the Lawyers Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen) made a very moving speech and closing argument about how we can afford to send these young men and women off to war and then abdicate our responsibility to care for them when they come back damaged from the wars we send them off to fight (supposedly for our freedom). this episode aired back in 2005. i can't but help to think it is still even more so relevant today than it was back in 2005.
we can afford trillions of dollars to send our children off to war but we can't afford billions to take care of them when they come home.
a good portion of the homeless population are veterans that we have decided are disposable. the politicians are running around campaigning about how they love the veterans but yet vote against every bill to help veterans claiming we can't afford it!!!
i don't know about you but does that seem like we love veterans??
this should be a mutually agreeable bipartisan issue that politicians from both sides can vote for, but yet these bill always stall in congress and not only that many localities are making laws criminalizing the act of being homeless and even passing laws making it illegal for people to feed the homeless!!!
WTF is wrong with this country, our people, politicians, and society!!! why can we spend trillions on war, send trillions to feed starving overseas and neglect our own starving homeless, elders, and sick (including veterans) at home?
it just sickens me how out of whack our countries priorities are.
on a positive note a few cities are doing the right thing by the homeless and picking them up and giving them a city job for a day at good pay doing things such as picking up trash along roadways etc, and Utah has virtually ended homelessness (including veterans) in their state. i have to commend these localities for doing the right thing and they should be an example for other localities to follow suit.
it's time we start doing the right thing by our own people here at home.
Thank You
