Within 1000 yards? In the world of capital ships that are underway, that's close. is the Mahon still operating under Obama era rules of engagement?

I did some research on this vessel. Very impressive:

LOL. I hardly think a fast moving coastal patrol boat qualifies as a capital ship. If there was a serious threat, perceived or otherwise our Destroyer would have never let it get to a 1000 yards out. Shoot, at that range our ship could have destroyed it with a push of a button.

Well crap. The link isn't the right one. But seriously. Check out some video of the Phalynx in action. 75 rounds per second, 20mm depleted uranium bullets, 2 mile range, laser guided. First bullet off target, second bullet on target. It has a fire and forget feature. If you push that button it will autonomously shoot everything moving within a mile until it runs out of bullets.
Bad ass

Just to scare the Iranians, fire the .50 Cals at the water line on their hull. Give em something to think about.

We've been playing this cat and mouse game for over three years. There HAVE been warning shots made. We just haven't decide to eat the mouse yet.

But the Mahan is a capital ship, which cannot turn on a dime; just the fact that they had to change course means it was a pretty close encounter. Personally, I would have preferred that the Mahan held course and run down that little pest. Our rules of engagement are rather ridiculous.

Here's an interesting artical that will help you understand what a Capital Ship really is. Our destroyer to s far from that. It would be considered a combat support ship. The largest ship in the Iranian Navy is similar to our old destroyers and cruisers. Heck, we sold them to them. They probably have 5 or 6 that would be considered battle ready. They could easily be defeated with a single harpoon missle fired from fifty miles away. No, this was a small costal patrol boat with a crew of maybe 10. It could have been easily destroyed by one 2 second burst from the Phalynx Close In Weapons System. To be honest? Our fleet faces a bigger threat from their single submarine.

Here's another thing to consider. Ships like destroyers, ffriggetts and cruises don't do well in a head in fight. The course correction they talked about could have easily been to bring weapons to bare.
